JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – Two state-owned firms, PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk (IDX: TLKM) signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (IDX: BBRI) regarding the collaboration on satellite-based technology services. As is known, both have their respective orbited satellites to serve customers in Indonesia.
According to CEO of Telkom, Ririek Adriansyah, through an agreement the two agreed to mutually support operational activities and provide added value to each company on the satellite services. While, CEO of BBRI, Sunarso stated, the cooperation with Telkom is a strategic step in order to improve an operational efficiency and effectiveness.
In general, the memorandum of understanding between the state companies, which forms the basis for cooperation, includes the use of mutual benefit either on a lease basis, or other business models for satellite capacity owned and operated by TelkomGroup. Did not rule out the possibility of other cooperation.
Last year, the lender had collaborated with PT Satkomindo Mediyasa to launch the second’ BRIsat satellite. This new satellite will cost around Rp3 trillion (US$206.89 million). BRIsat was created by the Space System and was launched at the Arianespace launch center in 2016. Today, the satellite are used by banks and government agencies.
According to the director of Bank Rakyat Indonesia, Indra Utoyo, by leasing a new satellite to Satkomindo, the company will spend less on costs than launching a new satellite by the bank itself. The new satellite is expected to be launched in 2023.
While, the telco operator has launched Telkom 4 satellite on August 7, 2018 and began the operating on Sept. 17, 2018. This satellite is the latest generation operated by PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) as a subsidiary of TelkomGroup that engaged in the satellite business. This satellite was launched on 7 August 2018 and began operating on 17 September 2018 then.
In early July, Telkomsat and its parent company launched a forest and land fire control application called ‘Asap Digital’. This application contains various latest information, such as CCTV monitoring, air condition, hotspot and weather forecast data which can be used for forest and land fire prevention.
