Jakarta’s Halim airport to reopen for commercial flights by September | Sector data

(Insider Stories) - State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) will reopen the Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in the east of Jakarta for commercial flights by September, with the airport expected to be able to have 6,000 passengers a day and have 21 aircraft movements per hour, easing the overcrowding burden on Jakarta’s main Soekarno-Hatta airport.

Currently used for military and charter flights, the airport will be able to accomodate 14 Boeing 747-300s and will handle passengers embarking from Jakarta on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, AP II director of technology development Salahuddin Rafi said.
AP II is in the process of a $2 billion expansion that will triple the capacity of Soekarna-Hatta, as the airport is handling around 150,000 passengers a day and the government predicts passenger numbers will increase 12% this year after growing 15% to over 70 million last year. Indonesia has 23 airports, 22 airline companies, 400 domestic and international routes, according to Transport Ministry data.
