(Insider Stories) — PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. today announced its plans to inaugurate a hand-rolled kretek cigarette manufacturing facility in Jember, East Java. The factory is expected to absorb a workforce of approximately 4,500 people, a strong catalyst for economic development in the Jember area.
Surabaya, 18 April 2013 – Sampoerna (IDX: HMSP) made the announcement today during the 2013 public expose in Surabaya on the company’s 2012 performance.
The public expose was attended by most of Sampoerna’s Board of Directors, including its President Director Paul Janelle.
“The new factory will strengthen Sampoerna’s SKT heritage which began back in 1913. The factory is expected to bring employment opportunities as well as having a strong multiplier effect for economic development in the Jember region,” said Janelle. “In our centenary year in 2013, we are proud of our continued contributions to Indonesia and we remain committed to achieving excellence in all aspects of our business,” he added.
On the business side, Sampoerna’s Director in charge of finance and information services, Mark Niehaus, presented Sampoerna’s financial performance for 2012. Sampoerna posted full year net revenue of IDR 38.3 trillion (net of excise tax) and net income of IDR 9.9 trillion or IDR 2,269 per share.
In 2012, the company continued to be the market leader in terms of market position, achieving a 35.6% share, driven by the Sampoerna A and U Mild brand family amid continuing growth in the machinemade kretek cigarette Low Tar Low Nicotine (SKM LTLN) segment. In the SKT segment, sales volume increased by 10% driven mainly by the Dji Sam Soe and Sampoerna Kretek brand families.
Sampoerna is one of the largest contributors to Indonesian Government revenue in terms of excise tax. Over the past five years, Sampoerna’s excise tax payments have almost doubled and in 2012 they accounted for 30.6% of the government’s total domestic revenue from tobacco excise tax.
