Foreign giants bid on $2.1 billion power grid | The Jakarta Post
(The Insider Stories) — At least five multinational investors will take part in a tender recently opened by state-owned electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara to construct an undersea power grid connecting South Sumatra and West Java provinces.
PLN construction director Nasri Sebayang said recently that the five companies include Siemens AG (SIE) from Germany, Hitachi Ltd. (6501) and Toshiba Corp (6502) from Japan, a consortium of ABB (ABB) and Marubeni Corp. (8002) from Switzerland and Japan, and a consortium of France’s Alstom (ALO) and state-owned construction company PT Wijaya Karya (WIKA), have formally passed the pre-qualification process.
“The bidders completed the pre-qualification selection process in 2012 and are ready to join the tender,” The Jakarta Post reports.
The 700-kilometer, IDR20 trillion ($2.1 billion) South Sumatra-Java transmission network will have a capacity of 500 kilovolts (kV) and be used to transmit power supply from a number of coal-fired power stations currently being built in South Sumatra to Java, with construction starting this year and likely complete in 2016.
