Indonesia Allocates IDR15,500 Each Month to Cover Insurance for the Poor Kontan

(Insider Stories) — The Indonesian government will allocate 16.1 trillion rupiah ($1.66 billion) worth of insurance premiums for 86.4 million of the country’s poor and semi-poor in 2014, Kontan newsportal reported Sunday.

The amount is equal to IDR15,500 a month in premiums per person, lower than a previous proposal of IDR22,200 a month. Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo was quoted as saying that IDR15,500 a month is the maximum amount that can be borne by the state budget.

Only a small minority of Indonesia’s 240 million people own health and life insurance policies, while the majority have difficulty accessing adequate health services. Indonesia plans to roll out an ambitious project to provide insurance for tens of millions of its citizens next year as part of efforts to create a social security system, which the Group-of-20 member country considers crucial to address a widening gap between the rich and the poor.
