JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – President Joko Widodo on Wednesday (17/01) installed Idrus Marham as new Minister for Social Affairs, Airforce Chief Marshall Yuyu Sutisna and Head of Presidential Staff (KSP) retired general Moeldoko.

Idrus Marham replaces Khofifah Indar Parawansa who has resigned earlier, after deciding to enter a race to become East Java governor in the upcoming regional election, while Yuyu Sutisna replaces Hadi Tjahjanto, who was earlier appointed as the country’s new Military Chief.

At the same event, President Joko Widodo also appointed Agum Gumelar as member of Presidential Advisory Board, replacing Hasyim Muzadi who has passed away.

Idrus Marham, 55 years old, was born in South Sulawesi. He earned his doctorate degree at University of Gajah Mada on politics. In 1997, he was a member of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). Through Golkar Party, he became member of the House of Representatives (DPR) for three periods, namely in 1999-2004, 2004-2009 and 2009-20014, representing South Sulawesi Province, Region III. In 2011, he resigned as member of DPR and decided to concentrate on the Golkar party affairs.

Agum Gumelar is a retired general who has held ministerial positions in previous governments, including Transportation Minister under Abdurrahman Wahid government (1999-2000), Transportation and Telecommunication Minister under Wahid Government (2000-2001), Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security (2001) and Transportation Minister (2001-2004).

Commenting on the appointment of Idrus Marham, President Widodo said he sees Marham as a someone who has the capability to perform the duties and the programs of the Social Affairs Ministry. “Because, he fits with the position,” President Widodo said.

He added Minister Idrus Marham is required to carry on the tasks that have yet to be completed by the previous minister, for instance increasing the quantity of the Welfare Family program to 10 million from six million families as well as the non-cash aid program.

Teten Masduki, previously the Head of Presidential Office Staff, will hold a new post as coordinator for the President’s Special Staffs.

The newly appointed Golkar Party Head Airlangga Hartato, however, keeps his position as the Industry Minister. This means that two cadres of the Golkar Party are now holding two cabinet ministers post.

Commenting on the decision to maintain Hartarto as Industry Minister, President Widodo said that Hartarto has an in-depth knowledge about the country’s industry and industrial policies. He has also been in the Commission VI, which has been the working partner of the Industry Ministry in the Parliament.

The other reason is that the current government has only practically one year left, therefore appointing new minister will not be effective.
