JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – An American multinational investment bank and financial services, Citigroup, announced that it will close its retail banking operations in 13 countries across Asia and Europe. The company will pull out from , including Indonesia, India, China, Australia, Bahrain, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Commenting on the move, the CEO Jane Fraser, Citigroup lacked the scale to properly compete in the 13 markets. As a result, she asserted, they decided to double down on wealth.
“We will operate our consumer banking franchise in Asia and EMEA solely from four wealth centres Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE and London. We believe our capital, investment dollars, and other resources are better deployed against higher returning opportunities in wealth management and our institutional businesses in Asia,” she wrote in an official statement released on Thursday (04/15).
While, CEO of Citi Indonesia, Batara Sianturi, emphasized that there will be no direct changes to their operations and there will be no direct impact on the employees after this announcement. He claimed,Citigroup has been in Indonesia since 1968 with a dedicated team and strong client base that have contributed to the group.
“We currently serve 90 percent of the 20 largest companies in Indonesia and last year we raised more than US$10 billion for our clients in Indonesia,” he said in a statement.

The chairman stressed out that this facility could only be obtained by banks that were considered still healthy. He added, “For unhealthy banks, we ask for depositors or sell their assets to other bank or other parties. Or we can use merger schemes or use Deposit Insurance Agency schemes.”
Earlier, the agency has announced that the regulator can force Indonesian banks to consolidate, merging or other steps to maintain financial stability amid the COVID-19.
