President reiterates drive to accelerate infrastructure development

JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – President Joko Widodo on Friday reiterated his government’s drive to accelerate development of infrastructure such as toll roads on the Island of Java and Sumatera Island, as well as rail projects on Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan as well as Papua.

He made statement when delivered his annual speech in front of Regional Representative Council (DPD) as well as People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). The President delivered his speech in separate session. Later today, the President will deliver introduction of the draft 2016 State Budget to the People’s Representative Council (DPR).

“We are building railway networks in Sulawesi, Kalimantan as well as Papua. We are also developing dams, ports as well as ‘sea toll’, supporting by the development of shipyards.

In energy sector the government has started the development of power plants across the country, with a target of developing 35,000 MW of power plants in next 5 years as revealed by the government earlier. The government will also develop traditional markets to support the people’s economy, improve people’s welfare as well as providing fiscal incentives to drive productive sector of the economy.

He also highlighted the importance of creative economy to stimulate innovation and improve national capacity. “The national development, in particular creative economy, should open access for creation of qualified human resources as well as improved people’s welfare and acquisition of knowledge and technology,” President Joko Widodo said.

Natural resources must be developed for the best interest of the people. “Without determination to make leapfrog, we will not be able to lay down a strong foundation to stand on our own feet in term of economic development and guarding national interest.”

President Joko Widodo said his government is driving the fundamental transformation of the national economy. The focus of national development is being shifted from consumption to productive sectors of the economy. The development must be started from remote areas, villages by improving human resources productivity and utilizing technology.

According to the President, the government is determined to maintain the State Budget to remain healthy and sustainable. The fiscal policies are directed to increase revenues without having had to disrupt investment climate so that the country stands on its own feet.

“We are reducing our dependence on revenues from natural resources. We are maintaining State Budget deficit and debt ratio in safe and controlled level,” the President said.

“In addition, we are also reorganizing subsidy to ensure that the subsidy reach the right target. We are also encouraging the development of infrastructure, food security and social protection,” he said. He noted that large portion of the subsidy has been reallocated to the productive sector of the economy.
