JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – The Ministry of Transportation (MoT) plans to raises flight ticket price after the enactment of large-scale social distancing in some regions, said the government official on Sunday (04/12). The new policy regulated through ministerial decree Number 18 of 2020 concerning Transportation Controls to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19.
According to director general at the ministry, Novie Riyanto, the regulation has been issued on April 9 signed by Luhut Binsar Panjaitan as the ad interim transportation ministry. He said, the number of passengers during the large-scale social distancing is limited to 50 percent of capacity. As such, the airfares are likely to double from current prices.
“We have calculated that it appears that passengers pay for two tickets. So the price increase has almost doubled,” he explained.
Panjaitan is targeting to approve the price revisions in the near future so airlines can immediately implement new tariffs. This policy is expected to be a stimulus for airlines that are forced to limit the number of passengers.
In general, the decree regulates three things, namely transportation control for the whole region, transportation control in the regions determined as large-scale social distancing, and transportation control for homecoming activities in 2020. However, the Government will pay attention to the dynamics that are developing and it is possible to make adjustments.
“The regulation applies to public and private transportation as well as transportation of goods and logistics, which regulates things that must be done starting at the time of travel preparation, during the trip, and when arriving at the destination or arrival,” said Adita Irawati, the spokeswoman at the ministry.
She added, this regulation is also intended for public and private vehicle passengers, transportation facilities, and infrastructure, both on land, railroad, sea and air transportation. But in certain cases, motorbikes used for personal or public purposes can transport passengers with stringent requirements according to health protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
