JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) - President Joko Widodo on Friday (Aug. 28) inaugurates the groundbreaking of coal-fired power plant (PLTU) Batang construction in Central Java, with capacity of 2 x 1000 MW (2000 MW). The construction of the power plant, the largest in South East Asia (ASEAN), finally kicks-off after years of delay to clear the land.
The President was accompanied by State Owned Enterprise Minister Rini Soemarno, Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning Ferry Mursyidan Baldan.
President Widodo said the project owners expect the construction to be completed in 60 months, however, he urged them to complete the project in 50 months. Therefore, the project is expected to be completed in 2018.
PLTU Batang is developed by PT Bimasena Power Indonesia, a joint venture between J-Power, Itochu of Japan and PT Adaro Energy Tbk.
The project owners estimated that the total investment to develop the power plant would reach US$4 billion or around Rp56 billion. The power plant will be built on 226 hectares of land covering 3 villages – Ujungnegoro, Karanggeneng and Ponowareng villages.
The construction of the power plant has been delayed for 4 years due to protests from local communities.
So far, 95 percent of land required to develop the power plant has been cleared. Around 12.5 hectares are being negotiated with local communities.
President Joko Widodo has made the development of the power plant as a priority as it will help achieve the government’s target to develop 35,000 MW of power plants in the next three years. (*)
