JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – The President of Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Indonesia ( KSPI), Said Iqbal, said that May Day 2019 would carry the main agenda to reject low wages. In this case, demanding to revoke Government Regulation Number 78 Year 2015 concerning Wages. Then increase the component of decent life needs from 64 to 84 items.

Iqbal said the main demand for wages had been approved by President Joko Widodo at a meeting last Friday (04/26). He added that Widodo had promised to announce the regulation changes during the Mayday celebration.

He said the main problem in the 2015 regulation was the lack of opportunities for workers to improve their welfare through wage increases. The regulation does not give laborers many opportunities to negotiate in terms of raising wages.

“The most principle thing in the regulation is the right to negotiate. The right to negotiate determines wages. In fact, it is the most substantial right,” he said.

He also highlighted the abolition of workers’ negotiating rights in the regulation, making the government seem unilateral in determining minimum labor wage data as did some leftist countries.

“The minimum wage data is unilateral from the government. It is like what communist countries like Cuba and North Korea do. It is contrary to various rules on wage laws,” he said.

Iqbal stressed, there are five other demands that will be voiced on the May Day action. first, removing outsourcing and apprenticeship under the guise of outsourcing. Second, increasing the benefits of health insurance and pension insurance. Third, reduce the Basic Electricity Rate and the price of basic food. Fourth, increase the welfare and income of teachers and honorary staff and online motorcycle taxi drivers.

Fifth, upholding an honest and peaceful democracy, especially in the RI Presidential Election for the period 2019-2024. “KSPI requested that the workers participate in guarding Form C1 in the Election Commission in their respective regions in order to build an honest and peaceful democracy,” said Iqbal.

The demonstration which will be attended by 50 thousand people was attended by opposition presidential candidate 2019 Prabowo Subianto. The opposition leader will address the labor welfare and honest democracy according to the theme of 2019 Indonesian Labor Day.

“KSPI and other federated affiliates will conduct May Day at the Indoor Senayan Tennis Court on May 1, starting at 10:00 a.m. until completion. Mr. Prabowo Subainto is confirmed to be present and will address Indonesian labor issues and democracy,” he said while ensuring there was no long march from the palace of the country so that the number of workers who came was reduced.

He said the invitation to Subianto was reasonable because KSPI was an opposition supporter in the 2019 Presidential Election. In fact, the support was declared at the commemoration of the 2018 Labor Day. Subianto is considered committed to fighting for the rights and welfare of workers.

The main theme of this year’s May Day commemoration is labor welfare and peaceful honest democracy. This theme was taken because basically, the trade union struggle is to realize prosperity and social justice for all the people of Indonesia. Meanwhile, the issue of democracy is important, because this year in Indonesia coincides with the holding of the 2019 Election democratic party.
