Two German firms interested to develop $800M smelter plants

JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – Two Germany companies have expressed the interest to develop nickel smelter plants with combined investment of US$800 million or equals to Rp10.4 trillion, the National Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) said.

BKPM Chairman Thomas Lembong said the investment plant was conveyed by the two companies during BKPM’s recent roadshow in a number EU companies such as German, France, Sweden, UK and Denmark. He however declined to disclose the name of the two companies.

In addition, one company from German has also expressed interest to invest in oil and gas industry, but yet to disclose the amount of its investment nor further details.

Thomas Lembong said during his visit to those countries, he also met with executives of top fund managers and bankers in German. “German is one of an important countries in Europe and has become a major investor in Indonesia,” he said.

Last year, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Indonesia reached US$28.9 billion, up 8.4% from previous year. Investment from German reached US$133 million.

In the past five years, FDI from EU to Indonesia amounted to US$13.3 billion or RP172.9 trillion. The major investors from EU are German, France, Luxembourg and Netherland.

During the EU visit, the BKPM delegation also met with OECD Secretary General Douglas Frantz in Paris as well as other EU leaders. The roadshow to EU is part of the government’s drive to boost investment this year to Rp678.8 trillion. (*)
