JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) - PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (IDX:TLKM) said it has successfully launched its third satellite, called Telkom 3S, on Feb. 14, carried by Ariane 5 rocket from Guiana Space Center at 18.39 local time.
The successful launch of the satellite marked 40th year of Telkom in operating telecom satellite in Indonesia.
“We praise the Almighty God that with the help of pray of the people of Indonesia, the Telkom 3S Satellige has been successfully launched,” President Director of Telkom Alex J. Sinaga said after the launching (Feb 14) or Wednesday morning in Indonesia (Feb 15).
The Telkom 3S satellite will add the two existing satellites that have been operated by Telkom, namely Telkom-1 and Telkom-2. The Telkom 3S will cover all Indonesian region as well as South East Asia and part of East Asia.
“The presence of the three satellite of Telkom is expected to reduce Indonesia’s depence on foreign satellites. The need for satellite service can be met by our own (Telkom) satellite),” said Alex.
Telkom spends about USD215 million to produce and launch the satellite, inclduing insurance cover. The satellite will be equipped with 42 transponders or equals to 49 Transponder Equivalent (TPE), consisting of 24 Transponder C-Band (24 TPE), 8 Transponder Extended C-Band (12 TPE) and 10 Transponder Ku-Band (13 TPE).
In addition to reduce dependency on foreign satellites, the Telkom 3S satellite is expected to narrow gap of information access in Indonesia as the new satellite will cover remote areas as well.
Telkom said with Ku-Band transponder, Telkom no has satellite service with high bit rate for high quality communicaiton services. Telkom-1 only has transonder C-band, while Telkom-2 only has transponder C-band and extended C-band.
“With this satellite capacity, Telkom hopes to play active role in supporting the digital society movement across the nation, and ultimately improve the nation’s economy,” said Alex.
