JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – Indonesian politician Puan Maharani, daughter of the chairwoman of Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan Party (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri, has inaugurated as the new House of Representatives leader on late Tuesday (10/01). She become the first female to lead the parliament.
She is a member of PDIP, the largest party in the parliament and one of the ruling party of President Joko Widodo’ administration.
“Finally the country will have a female House spekaer after 74 years of independence,” she said.
The youngest child and the only daughter of former Indonesian president Soekarnoputri, hoped she could inspire other women to be able to wrestle in politics. She urged, “Politics is not a taboo subject, politics are dynamically developing, but in fact, it can also produce women who can later benefit Indonesia.”
According to the law, the House speaker position is given to the winner of the 2019 legislative elections on 17 April. In the meantime, four House deputy speaker positions are given to other top five political parties.
PDIP has the most seats in House with 128 seats. It is followed by Golongan Karya Party (Golkar) with 85 seats. The thid place is taken by Gerakan Indonesia Raya Party (Gerindra) with 78 seats. Nasional Demokrat Party (NasDem) is forth place with 59 seats. In the fifth place, Kebangkitan Bangsa Party (PKB) controls 58 seats.
So the new deputy speakers were Azis Syamsuddin from Golkar, Gerindra represented by Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, while NasDem has Rachmat Gobel and Muhaimin Iskandar from PKB.
The granddaughter of the country’ founding father Soekarno, also confirmed that she had resigned from his position as the coordinating minister for human development and cultural affairs in Widodo’ cabinet. She was one of eight women appointed as ministers. “Yesterday I had sent my resignation to president,” she adds.
Maharani added the resigned minister after law and human rights minister Yassona Laoly did so for the same reason become the lawmakers. The observer rated that the House performance would be sluggish under Maharani leaderships.
Researcher of Forum Masyarakat Peduli Parlemen Indonesia Lucius Karus said her position as part of the ruling government coalition party makes the oversight function would not be critical.
