Indonesia's IT Spending Estimated at $16.5 billion in 2014

Insider Stories - The spending of Indonesian companies on the information technology (IT) is estimated at $16.5 billion in 2014, or up 12.24 percent from last year, a research company International Data Corporation (IDC) said.

Associate Director and Head of Operations for IDC Indonesia Sudev Bangah explained the majority of the budget was earmarked for hardware spending which reached 87 percent, or approximately $14.3 billion.

For service segment, the budget was estimated to reach $1.4 billion or approximately 8.6% from the total IT spending, while the remaining $726 million was allocated for software.

In terms of hardware, IDC said more than 55 million devices were shipped to Indonesia in 2013. Feature phones still dominated the number, reaching 50 million, while only 9 million were smart phones.

Last year was also marked by an increase in demand for tablets. The total tablet shipments reached 3.6 million, surpassed notebook computer shipments which reached 3.35 million.

In terms of operating system, Android still dominates with 77 percent, followed by Blackberry with 16 percent, Apple 4 percent, and Windows by 3 percent.
