Indonesia recorded a trade deficit of $660 million in September, a swing from a $70 million surplus in August, the central statistics agency (BPS) said on Friday.

The $70 million was a revision from $130 million that BPS announced last month.

September exports were recorded at $14.81 billion (-6.85% y/y), while imports stood at $15.47 billion (+ 0.8% y/y).

"Trade balance data was dissappointing, as it is back in deficit due to unexpected higher import growth," Bank Danamon Indonesia said in a note to client on Friday.

"Main cause of the deficit was the large decline in the non oil and gas trade surplus as imports rose quite significantly. Imports of raw materials (biggest share of imports) and capital goods was still relatively high, each recorded 11% month-on-month and 13% month-on-month growth. Biggest imports covered mechanical and electrical machineries, iron and steel," the note, contributed by economists Dian Ayu Yustina, Anton Hendranata & Anton Gunawan, said.
