JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – The results of the 2019 Indonesian general election are in the process of being counted at the polling station. Both incumbent candidate Joko Widodo-Maruf Amin and opposition Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno agreed to wait for the official results announced by the General Election Commission as official and didn’t dare to claim victory.
In a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon opposition candidate Subianto appealed to his supporters not to make the quick count results of a number of survey institutions as a benchmark. He actually asked to keep guarding the vote count against the polling station to the central level.
Subianto also revealed a number of election fraud practices that were detrimental to his side. Therefore he asked all volunteers to take note of all the fraud and ensure that the votes selected at the sub-district level and the polling stations were well maintained.
“My fellow countrymen, we are very concerned since last night for occurrences that have hindered our supporters. Many ballots were not delivered to the polling stations, many polling stations were opened [late] at 11 a.m. There were many anomalies. Our supporters didn’t get the invitation to vote, and so on. Many ballots were previously voted, also found in favor of the incumbent tickets,” he said in a press conference in Jakarta, on Wednesday (04/17).
Despite all this, Subianto also said their exit poll in 5,000 polling stations show the opposition winning at 55.4 percent. “The result of the quick count, our quick count shows that we have won at 55.4 percent. To all our volunteers, I implore you to oversee and guard our victory across all polling stations in the sub-districts,” he said.
According to the former general, the results of a number of existing quick count institutions wanted to build a public narrative as if the opposition had lost. He ensured that the official announcement of the election organizers would determine who won the presidential election.
“I would like to stress to the people of Indonesia, that there have been attempts from pollsters and surveys that we know of, cooperating with one side, to steer public opinion as to if we have lost. We must not be provoked. Go and continue to usher the result in your polling stations,” he said.
But he stressed election security as the main thing. He called on all supporters to maintain order, ensure peace and joy in democracy remained strong. “I urge my supporters to remain calm. Everyone should stay calm and remain unprovoked from committing anarchy. Focus on safeguarding the ballot boxes, because they hold the key to our victory so that the lies that have been committed can be fought,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, incumbent Widodo asked all his supporters to be patient waiting for the official announcement from the election organizers. He also called on all parties to reunite after the election, maintain security and peace, avoid various practices that could cause riots.
“Let us reunite as brothers and sisters of the country after this election, establish our harmony and brotherhood,” Widodo said accompanied by his running mate Amin and a number of senior coalition party officials.
In his press statement, Widodo also expressed his gratitude to the election organizers and the security forces, police and army, who had ensured the passage of the democratic party was safe and peaceful.
