“Responding to the outbreak, the government has enacted a ban on the import of live animal species originating or transiting in China into Indonesian territory,” said trade minister, Agus Suparmanto in the official statement released today (02/13).
The types of animals which are prohibited consist of 53 tariff items, including horse, donkey, pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, ducks, turkeys, and other living animals that are breastfeeding. The import ban also includes live animals in carousel, swing, shooting gallery, other amusement park games, live animals in the traveling circus, menagerie, and theater.
This regulation, said Suparmanto, is also a form of protection of human and animal health, which is the responsibility of the government and is inline with Article XX of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 of the World Trade Organization.
Previously, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the spread of the coronavirus originating from Wuhan, China, as the Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Followed the government decision to ban import and tourists from China, President Xi Jinping has spoke over phone with President Joko Widodo on the virus issues on Tuesday night (02/11). In the conversation, he assured that his country could fight the epidemic and achieving goals of economic and social development.
He stressed out, that fighting the epidemic is currently the top priority of the government. China has given full play to its system advantage, waged a people’ war in epidemic prevention and control, adopted the most rigorous and thorough prevention and control measures, and achieved positive results, he said.
He believed, the world second largest economy has the capability to score an outright victory over the epidemic. China will continue to strengthen cooperation on the prevention and control of the epidemic with Indonesia and other countries in an open and transparent manner to safeguard regional and global public health security, he added.
The Southeast largest economy itself has prepared its readiness to deal with the outbreak. President has asked his staff to carefully calculate the impact of implementing the policies adopted by the government regarding this matter.
The reasoned, in the trade sector, China became the first export destination country with a market share of approximately 16.6 percent of Indonesia’ total exports. The neighboring country is also known to be the largest country of origin of imports for the nation.
Widodo saw the potential for exploiting export market niches in other countries that had previously imported a lot from China. Likewise, this has created momentum for the import substitution industry in the country to increase production and develop further.
