JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) - Five media companies, PT Surya Citra Media Tbk (IDX: SCMA), PT Media Nusantara Citra Tbk (IDX: MNCN), Trans Corp., PT Intermedia Capital Tbk (IDX: MDIA), and Media Group are competing o become a multiplexing organizer for terrestrial digital television broadcasts in 22 provinces. The media groups, through their subsidiaries, have passed the administrative requirements to become organizers in a number of selection object areas.

According to the communication and informatics ministry statement released on Wednesday (04/15), PT Media Televisi Indonesia is interested in 19 selection objects, PT Duta Visual Nusantara Tivi Tujuh in 10 selection objects, PT Televisi Transformasi Indonesia in 12 selection objects, PT Indosiar Visual Mandiri in 12 selection objects, PT Surya Citra Televisi in 10 selection objects.

The minister, Johnny Plate, said that the selection of service areas was based on a study of the calculation of the number of multiplexing slots for all broadcasting institutions in the area.

Indonesian government is targeting the digital terrestrial free-to-air TV broadcasting in 2022. The digital TV infrastructure has begun to be built and operated by private multiplexing operators in Java and Riau Islands since end of 2012. Other areas will gradually to follow are Aceh, North Sumatra, East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan.

The process of transition from analog to digital leads to the discontinuation of analog switch-off (ASO). ASO has been carried out in total in many countries, including the United States (2009), Japan (2011), Canada (2011), United Kingdom and Ireland (2012), Australia (2013) ). Indonesia set ASO nationally in 2018.

However, ASO will be carried out beforehand in stages in big cities that have already been reached by digital TV broadcasts. Like cities in Java, ASO is planned to be implemented in 2015 after almost the entire population is reached and has watched digital broadcasts.

However, the number is limited and the distribution also takes a long time and the criteria for recipients must be in accordance with the provisions. The government also encourages local set top box manufacturers to support the program.
