Indonesia exports up 27.7% yoy in January, trade surplus expands

JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) - Indonesia recorded exports of US$13.38 billion in January 2017, increased 27.71% from January 2016 (year-on-year/yoy), but down 3.21% from previous month, in line with a rise of non-oil and gas exports.

Indonesia’s imports totaled US$11.99 billion in January, increased 14.45% from January 2016 (yoy), but down 6.21% from December, the Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS) revealed on Thursday (Feb 16).

As a result, Indonesia posted trade surplus of US$1.39 billion in the month, expanding from surplus of US$990 million in December 2016.

In December last year, Indonesia booked exports of US$13.829 billion. A decline of exports from previous month was driven by a decline of non-oil and gas exports by 3.70% to US$12.113 million from US$12.579 billion in previous month.

Exports of oil and gas, however, rose 1.72% to US$1.271 billion from US$1.25 billion in December.

Non oil and gas exports reached US$12.11 billion, increased 29.24% from the same month last year, but down 3.75 from December.

The largest non-oil and gas exports were mainly contributed by processing industrial product, which increased 26.27% yoy, agriculture products rose 11.67% yoy and mining product exports surged 50.37%.

Indonesia’s largest non-oil and gas export markets were China amounting to US$1.55 billion, followed by USA US$1.43 billion and India US$1.32 billion. The exports to these three countries contributed 35.46% to Indonesia’s exports value. Exports to EU (28 countries) amounted to US$1.37 billion.

Non oil and gas imports in the month reached US$10.18 billion, up 10.12% from January 2016, but down 8.12% in December.

Oil and gas imports in the month reached US$1.81 billion, increased 48.03% from January 2016, and also increased 6.25% from December.

Indonesia mainly imported non-oil and gas from China (US$2.92 billion), followed by Japan US$1.03 billion and Thailand US$0.65 billion, BPS said.

Imports from South East Asia (ASEAN) made up 19.56% of Indonesia’s imports in the month, while imports from EU contributed 9.59% to total imports. (*)
