JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – The incumbent President Joko Widodo and presidential hopeful Prabowo Subianto will announce their running mate for 2019’s presidential election today, said the two sides on Wednesday (08/08). On Friday, the candidates will list their name to General Election Commission.
“We will announce tomorrow (today),” Gerindra official Ahmad Riza Patria told TheInsiderStories. He said the announcement will be carried out in Subianto’ house in Kertanegara Street in South Jakarta.
Last night a meeting between Subianto’ coalition parties continued until midnight and resulted of two candidates to accompany him to challenge the incumber President Joko Widodo in the 2019′ presidential election. The name are Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Sandiaga Uno.
Patria explained, another candidate, cleric Ustad Abdul Somad also known UAS, had rejected his nomination to become Subianto’s number two, saying that he want to stay as a cleric and religious teacher.
Somad, a popular Islamic cleric was proposed by a federation of Islamic group and National Movement To Safeguard Clerics Edict (GNPF-Ulama ), a group behind anti Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama rally last year. Ahok is a then Jakarta governor whose political blunder of citing a Al-Qur’an verse cost the election and gave him jail time.
Widodo itself, was said still awaiting the decision of the Constitutional Court on Perindo Party’s Judicial Review on the Election Law before deciding who was his running mate in the 2019 presidential election. The court has meeting today but so far there is no agenda on the judicial review.
According to our sources close to Widodo, his vice president Jusuf Kalla still the main candidate to accompany him in 2019′ presidential election followed by former chairman of Constitutional Court Mahfud MD and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
When media tried to confirmed him on the names, Widodo denied to comment but give a clue he will declare his running mate today. Previously, Muhammad Romahurmuziy, Persatuan Pembangunan Chairman told reporters the declaration of Widodo as a presidential candidate on Friday (10/10) at 10 am.
