JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Monday (July 17) named Setya Novanto, chairman of House of Representantives and political party Golkar, suspect in the electronic Identity Card (e-KTP) corruption case.

The alleged violations are related to Setya’s role in the corruption case surrounding the Rp5.9 billion (US$442 million) e-KTP’s project.

KPK chief Agus Rahardjo said KPK announced on Monday, new status for Novanto after getting preliminary evidence fairly to declare someone as suspect.

KPK had closely examined facts of trial for Irman and Sugiharto (defendants) over the e-KTP case (in 2011-2012 at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“KPK named SN, a lawmaker as suspect as he has intention to abuse his power or authority which then potentially affect the state loss of Rp2.3 trillion,” Agus said in press statement.

He added, SN through businessman Andi Agustinus alias Andi Narogong (AN) is assumed to have role in procurement and planning processes.

KPK is also now investigating other two suspects MSH and MN (both are lawmakers). While AN is believed to be a close confidant of Novanto and was named a suspect in this graft case.

Novanto is now under pressure and suspect status for him. This, would be the blessing in disguise for Novanto’s rivals in Golkar Party like Vice President Jusuf Kalla and former Golkar’s chairman Aburizal Bakrie.

For Bakrie and Kalla, it’s the best momentum for them to regain their footing in the party, and in turn to regain their bargaining position vis-a-vis with President Joko Widodo. Both of them may have another chance at taking over the leadership of Golkar through their figures.

While Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, the retired Army general, could already have something in place to prevent Kalla and Bakrie from taking over the Golkat Party. Luhut may already have someone to replace Novanto and thus maintain a Golkar that is friendly to his boss Jokowi. (DS)
