JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – Chairman of the Nasional Demokrat (Nasdem) party Surya Paloh was charged Rp1 trillion (US$68.96 million) by former Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli for alleged defamation. He reported Paloh accompanied by 60 lawyers to the Indonesian Police Headquarters, in Jakarta, on Tuesday (16/10).
“We asked if the police had succeeded in proving this bad reputation, that Surya Paloh would pay material compensation and immaterial 1 trillion rupiah,” he said.
The leader of the legal team Salih Mangara Sitompul said his client had never accused Paloh being involved in import policies that harm farmers and salt farmers. But suddenly, Ramli received a summons from Paloh as chairman of the Nasdem Party.
“When the subpoena came, we thought it was pollution. We never called Surya Paloh a Nasdem politician. We mentioned it personally,” he said.
Then, his client also never called Paloh a bitch. However, through his attorney, the incumber supporter instead accused Ramli of saying that.
This case stems from Ramli’s statement that the Paloh with the Minister of Trade Enggartiasto Lukita played an import policy for certain interests. He also said that Indonesian President Joko Widodo was afraid to the chairman.
Based on these allegations, the ranks of the Nasdem Party officially made a report on the slander of Ramli who was considered unfounded. One of high officials of the party, Syahrul Yasin Limpo said that vulgar accusations by the former minister in the television program in early September had become public consumption.
According to him, Ramli’s vulgar statement said President Widodo was afraid to Paloh would build a public perception that him could pressure the government in preparing import policies.
“Vulgar, improper and hate speech words are not appropriate to come out of the national elite. He has built an opinion that the Paloh has enough pressure on the president. That statement is very untrue and hoax,” Yasin said on Sept. 17.
He added, that the slanderous report of Ramli to the Jakarta Metro Police had fulfilled the existing legal offenses. Even before his party reported this, the Nasdem Party had sent a summons to him. Nasdem asked Ramli to settle the law by submitting an apology.
